There will be a major surgical conference in conjunction with College Science Week. The Conference will run from Tuesday 1st July to Saturday 5th July. There will also be workshops on Sunday 29th June and Monday 30th June. Tuesday and Wednesday will concentrate on Orthopaedic Surgery. The major orthopaedic speaker will be Dr Alex Piras. Alex is one of Europe’s leading Orthopaedic surgeons and his lectures will concentrate on lower limb injuries in dogs including radiographic evaluation of the distal extremities, diagnosis and treatment of ligamentous injuries of the tarsal and carpal joints, complex fractures of the tarsus and carpus, interesting and unusual uses of hybrid fixateurs and treatment of skeletal deformities with ring fixateurs. Muscle injuries and stress fractures of performance dogs will also be discussed. Other features of the orthopaedic days will include a cruciate forum including description of the various techniques available and a panel discussion that should prove very ‘lively’. The panel will be hosted by Prof Rick Read. Several ‘Human’ orthopaedic surgeons will give updates in current techniques in human cruciate and meniscal surgery as well as current concepts in fracture and articular cartilage repair. Thursday will concentrate on Oncology. Australia is fortunate to be home to many leading veterinary oncologists and they will share their experience and expertise in covering a variety of body systems. Both medical and surgical oncology will be addressed. The day will be arranged by Dr Maureen Thompson. Friday and Saturday will concentrate on Soft Tissue Surgery. Our major speaker will be Prof Gary Ellison from the University of Florida. Prof Ellison is the Head of Surgery at the University of Florida and is the Senior Editor of the most recent edition of Slatter. This will be Prof Ellison’s first visit to Australia. Prof Ellison will speak on contemporary approaches to difficult abdominal surgical cases. One session will be run in conjunction with the Emergency and Critical Care Chapter discussing management of Septic Peritonitis. Prof Ellison and our own Prof Geraldine Hunt will compare and discuss their approaches to the surgical management of portosystemic shunts. Saturday afternoon will complete the programme with a Residents’ Session. A major prize of $1000 will be awarded to the best young speaker. Workshops will be run on the Sunday and Monday prior to the conference. Workshops will include the use of the Interlocking Nail system and a Cranial Cruciate Ligament TTO workshop. These will be run by Dr Geoff Robins of St Lucia Surgical Services. There will be a two day Equine Surgery Forum on Tuesday and Wednesday which will flow into a combined three day conference with the Equine Chapter on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Professor Tim Greet, a leading European Equine Surgeon will present papers on Equine Orthopaedic and Respiratory Surgery plus facilitate active discussions. There will also be papers presented by local speakers and a “how to” session with tips on common techniques. The Equine program will provide cutting edge information that will be of interest to all practitioners from specialists to general practitioners. Delegates of the conference will also be able to attend College Science Week on Thursday 3rd to Saturday 5th July as part of conference registration. This conference will provide a great opportunity to be part of the integrated multi-discipline programme as well as ample time to interact socially and scientifically with members of the profession from Australia and overseas. This meeting is not restricted to College or Chapter Members and will be the only major surgical conference in Australasia in 2008.
